In 2007, a group of friends gathered in a small pub in Santa Cruz, California decided to celebrate their favourite beverage: beer. The celebration quickly took hold in the Western United States and then spread around the world. Today, just 9 years later, International Beer Day (IBD) is celebrated on the first Friday of every August and spans 207 cities, 50 countries and 6 continents. Organizers specifically define three motivations for the event:

To gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer.
To celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer.
To unite the world under the banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations together on a single day.
In Ecuador, as is the case around the world, beer is a top-selling and much enjoyed beverage that accompanies our everyday life and our special moments with friends. Over the last few years, numerous artisanal beer companies have sprung up, supplementing the already well-known local beer brands. Santana Brewing Company, a family-run company, is a top local craft beer producer, selling its small batches directly to exclusive venues where lucky consumers can try out any of their well-received varieties, including:

IRISH RED 5.50%: A red-dark copper variety with rose, jasmine and geranium aromas that mixes the slightly sweet flavours of raisins and prunes with the mildly bitter taste of toasted grains.

STOUT 6.50%: An intense black beer with a thick, mocha colored foam, a strong aroma of toasted malt and deeper notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

PALE ALE 5.00%: A golden beer with white foam, it offers a gentle aroma of malt and citrics combined with the welcoming smell of recently baked bread, and a light and refreshing flavor.

AMBER ALE 5.25%: An amber-colored beer with a long-lasting white foam, it smells intensely of hops, with fruity, floral and caramel-like accents that remind us of honey, candided apples and spices.

BROWN ALE 5.50%: A dark brown beer with toffee, caramel, coffee and toasted corn nuts aromas complemented by the softly sweet taste of caramelized malt and slightly bitter toasted grains.

CHULLA CHELA 9.00%: A clear golden beer with notes of spices, tropical fruits and floral-tinged hops, its taste brings to mind delicately sweet malt, a hint of citrics and a touch of honey.

You can try all of these varieties – as well as the local dishes they are meant to accompany – while sitting back and enjoying an authentic tour through Ecuador’s varied and exciting culinary and musical landscape at Misquilla Cantina Lounge, in Quito.
